Traditional art materials recommendations document

a google document i made of my recommendations for traditional art materials.

Comic Book Plus

a site where you can read public domain comics for free. good for learning the art styles of the time, how things were written, or if you just wanna read some old comics. runs on donations, so donating would be recommended.

Fashion History Timeline

Folk Dresses of West Africa

National Museum of African American History and Culture

some resources you can use as references for fashion, etc. will be updated over time.

Dimden's Old Twitter Extension

make Twitter 20x more tolerable in the modern era!! not exactly an art resource, but if you're using twitter to post your art i think you should be running this. Returns the site to its old layout, also appears to run a little better somehow. Available on Chrome, for firefox users like me it has to be installed manually [fortunately, that isn't very hard]. instructions on how to do that are given clearly. [UPDATE 2/4/2026: i really wouldn't recommend people use twitter, or at least not use it 'exclusively'. it's just kind of not worth it. you can grown an audience literally anywhere else if you put the effort towards doing it...yes, 'even' bluesky. but if you do use twitter use Oldtwitter lol]

Art21

Art21 is a site/documentary series that goes in depth about contemporary art and the artists behind it, as well as the "why" of their pieces and how the artist's life affects their work. there's lots of different artists that are discussed, and it is free to watch. learning from your peers is a very useful thing and will help you in your art journey.

Mel Birnkrant's Collection

Mel Birnkrant is a man with an incredibly vast collection of antique toys-primarily those based on Disney characters [especially Mickey Mouse], but his collection expands far beyond that as well. the page linked is a guided tour of his collection, but the actual homepage of the site can be found here. i recommend looking through this site if you are interested in antique toy and character designs or are looking for good references to draw those things. my favorite page and discussion is about the Mickey/Minnie ventriloquist dolls-I found his insights on them to be rather beautiful, and he took a great photo of them.

CONTENT WARNING-a couple of photographs show toys/imagery that are Jim Crow-era racist.

Dr. Eeyore's Hospital

A website focusing on Worlds of Wonder toys and how to repair them, particularly Teddy Ruxpin [but others like Mother Goose and Snoopy are present too, though their repair guides are not nearly as in-depth or complete]. Useful for if you want an in-depth guide on how these toys functioned, or if you own one and want to learn how to fix it.
